State minister for food warns against price gouging

The government has launched an initiative to supply protein-rich food items at subsidised prices to low-income people during Ramadan, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Agriculture and Food Sultan Salauddin Tuku has said.

On Thursday, he said the programme aims to include nearly a million families across the country.

He outlined the plan at the inauguration of the subsidised milk, eggs and meat sales at the Livestock Research Institute in Mohakhali.

He said, “The plan will have a positive impact on price control in the market and ordinary consumers will also benefit.”

Referring to seasonal price hikes, Salauddin said: “During Ramadan, when some unscrupulous traders increase the prices of goods, it inflicts more trouble on low-income people. Such government initiatives will play a supportive role in alleviating their hardship.”

He said there are plans to expand the scheme in the future.

“To fulfil the commitments made by the prime minister to the nation, we must work with honesty and dedication. Only through collective cooperation can we move the country forward on the path of development and prosperity,” he said.

Salauddin also said initiatives would be taken to introduce Family Cards, Agriculture Cards and Health Cards to implement the government’s electoral pledges.
