Around 650 people, including a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader, have joined Jamaat-e-Islami, the party says.
The new members include former judges, lawyers, retired military and police officials and businesspeople.
Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman handed flowers and religious books to new members at the party’s Dhaka South unit gathering at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh on Tuesday.
The party named 23 of the new members in its media statement.
