A group of attackers have attacked a BNP leader in front of his house in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.

The victim, 55-year-old Nurul Islam, is the senior joint general secretary of the BNP's Ward No. 33 unit.

The incident took place in front of his house on Road No. 4 of Satmasjid Housing in Mohammadpur around 2:30pm on Friday, said Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector Rakibuzzaman Rakib.

Nurul, who suffered serious injuries to the left side of his face, shoulder and left hand, is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Inspector Rakib said, “A group of men came on two bikes, stabbed him indiscriminately, and fled. Some say there were four of them, some say there were six.”

Asked about the motive for the attack, he said: “It isn’t the proper time to talk about it. We are trying to identify and arrest those involved.”

The police initially believe that the attack may have been due to “political enmity”.

The injured Nurul’s younger brother Billal Hossain told Dhaka Medical College that his brother was standing outside his house after Friday prayers when five to six people on two bikes hacked and seriously injured him before fleeing the scene.

Hearing Nurul’s screams, locals rushed him first to a local hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Inspector Md Faruk, officer-in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp said that Nurul had injury marks from sharp weapons on his face, shoulders and various parts of his body.

The BNP leader hails from the Lalmohan area of Bhola. He currently lives with his family in a rented house at Satmasjid Housing.
