Three people have died when their microbus crashed into a dump truck while taking an elderly woman to the hospital in Meherpur. Four others have been injured in the accident.

The incident occurred in the Shukurkandi area of the Meherpur-Kushtia Highway around 11:30am on Tuesday, according to Bani Israil, chief of Gangani Police Station.

The dead have been identified as Shahin, 25, his aunt Akhtar Banu aka Lal Buri, 45, and microbus driver Jamal, 40. Shahin and his aunt hailed from Garadob village.

Citing the family, OC Bani said that Shahin’s grandmother Fazila Khatun had been admitted to the Gangani Upazila Health Complex with diarrhoea. When her condition deteriorated, doctors referred her to Kushtia Medical College Hospital.

Shahin, Banu, and other members of the family set off on the microbus to take his grandmother to the hospital.

Along the way, the microbus crashed into a dump truck parked on the side of the road in the Shukurkandi area. The accident led to severe injuries for eight passengers on board the microbus.

Locals rescued them and rushed them to Kushtia Medical College Hospital. Three of them died while receiving treatment.

OC Bani said, “A police team was sent to the scene when the accident was reported. The dump truck and the microbus were seized. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the road crash.”

Subsequent legal steps will be taken on the matter if the families of the dead submit a complaint, he said.
