Following protests over the alleged rape of a Marma schoolgirl in Khagrachhari, the district administration has imposed Section 144 and deployed seven platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh.

On Saturday, the BGB said the move was made to “maintain law and order”.

The rape allegation surfaced on Tuesday night, sparking protests and tensions across the hill district. On Wednesday, police, with support from the Army, arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the case.

On Saturday, Deputy Commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khan announced the imposition of Section 144.

The order, effective from 2pm on Saturday, prohibits public gatherings, and authorities have warned that legal action will be taken against anyone violating it.

Police arrested 19-year-old Shayon Sheel in connection with the crime. Meanwhile, angry locals, under the banner “Jumma Chhatra-Janata”, staged a road blockade demanding justice.

The road blockade continued across the district on Saturday, leading to further tensions.
