A man and his wife have died in a late-night fire at their home in Dinajpur town.

The fire broke out around 1:30am on Monday in the Suihari Ashram Para area, said Fire Service official Obaidul Islam.

The victims were identified as Tapan Sarkar, 48, and his wife Lata Sarkar, 35.

Neighbour Ashok Kumar said most residents had been asleep when flames were spotted in the couple’s house.

He said locals informed the Fire Service, whose personnel later extinguished the fire and recovered the couple’s bodies from inside.

Obaidul said a Fire Service unit rushed to the scene after being alerted by neighbours and brought the fire under control.

“It is initially believed that the fire originated from a gas cylinder leak,” he added.
