Five of six infants die after premature birth in Dhaka

The sextuplets weighed between 615g and 900g, with the surviving infant in critical condition

Five out of six infants born at Dhaka Medical College Hospital have died within two days, with the sole surviving baby in critical condition.

The infants were born prematurely to 23-year-old Mokseda Akhter Priya from Noakhali on Sunday.

The sextuplets, born at least 10 weeks early, weighed between 615g and 900g, roughly one-third of the normal birth weight, which put them in a critical condition from birth.

The children’s father, Md Hanif, a Qatari expatriate, reported that one of the babies died immediately after birth. Three of the surviving babies were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a private hospital, while two were placed in the NICU at DMCH.

Currently, only one baby remains in critical condition at the private hospital, on life support.
