A union-level BNP leader shot in Keraniganj has died after two days of hospitalisation.

Hasan Mollah, general secretary of Hazratpur Union BNP, died on Saturday around 4pm while receiving treatment at Holy Family Hospital, police said.

The incident occurred around 9pm on Thursday, the first day of the official election campaign, outside the BNP office in Ward 9 of Hazratpur Union.

According to Keraniganj Model Police Station chief Md Saiful Alam, Hasan was attacked while returning from a sermon in Dhalikandi.

The assailants, arriving on a motorcycle, opened fire at close range on the right side of his abdomen and fled immediately.

He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 10:45pm for emergency treatment.

Despite urgent care, his condition remained critical.

On Friday, Hasan underwent surgery at DMCH, but his health deteriorated.

Subsequently, he was transferred to Holy Family Hospital’s ICU late Friday evening for advanced treatment, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the local political community, as it occurred on the very first day of campaigning, highlighting the escalating tensions in the area.

Police continue to investigate the attack, though the assailants remain unidentified.
