Two cleaners run over, killed by covered van in Dhaka’s Khilkhet

The street cleaners were working across from the Le Meridien Dhaka hotel when the accident occurred, police say

Two street cleaners working for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have been run over and killed by a covered van in Khilkhet.

The dead have been identified as Ashraf Ali, 60, and Nehar Begum, 40. Ashraf hailed from Sherpur while Nehar hailed from Naogaon.

The accident occurred on the road across from the Le Meridien Dhaka hotel around 4:45am on Sunday, according to Sub-Inspector Al Amin of Khilkhet Police Station.

“Two DNCC cleaners were at work on the road when a Dhaka-bound covered van ran them over, killing them on the spot,” he said.

The bodies are being processed to be sent to the hospital for autopsies, he said.

The covered van involved in the accident has been seized and its driver, Abul Kashem, has been detained, police said.
