A court has sentenced three people to death in the 2019 murder case of businessman Saidur Rahman in Brahmanbaria’s Bancharampur Upzaila.
Brahmanbaria Additional District and Sessions Judge Ayesha Akter Sumi issued the sentence on Thursday, prosecution lawyer Md Azad Mia said.
The convicts have been identified as Kajal Mia, 49, Ripon Mia, 32, and Rasel Mia, 30.
Ripon and Kajal were present in court during the verdict. They were each fined Tk 50,000 as well.
Citing the case documents, Azad said that police found the body of fruit trader Saidur in the Meghna River near the Upazila’s launch terminal on Sept 30, 2019 after he went missing since the previous day.
Since Lokman Mia, the brother-in-law of Saidur, filed a case as plaintiff naming Rasel as the suspect on Oct 1 that year, the accused has been on the run, he added.
During the investigation, police found Ripon and Kajal’s involvement in the murder and arrested them.
In September 2020, police submitted a chargesheet to the court. Later Ripon and Kajal gave confessional testimonies under Section 164 in court.
Defence lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Sami said the convicts will move the High Court and appeal against the verdict.
