The two city corporations of Dhaka have begun waste collection and cleaning operations following the ritual sacrifices of animals in different parts of the capital on the first day of Eid-ul-Azha.
City corporation workers were seen toiling away in many areas across the city, including Malibagh, Kakrail, Mohakhali, Motijheel, Paltan, and Rajabazar around 12:30pm on Thursday.
After 11am, sacrificial waste could be seen being collected from alleys and garages of houses and apartments before being piled on the side of the road.
In some places, the waste is being taken to the Secondary Transfer Station (STS) in three-wheelers by city corporation workers.
From there, it is being sent to the Aminbazar and Matuail landfills in trucks and pickup trucks.
Md Iqbal, a Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) cleaning worker assigned to Malibagh, said: "We have started the work in advance. We are properly carrying out the instructions given to us by the city corporation."
Truck driver Kabir said, "We will take the garbage. We will complete the work within the time set by the city corporation."
DSCC has set a time limit of eight hours for the removal of animal waste for Eid-ul-Azha.
About 13,453 workers have been assigned to the task.
DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam told bdnews24.com, “During Eid, we will use double the number of vehicles and triple the number of workers that regularly take to the field.”
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has made extensive preparations for the prompt removal of sacrificial waste in the capital as well.
The city corporation has announced the removal of sacrificial waste within 12 hours.
The DNCC said that 16,000 cleaning workers and more than 750 waste trucks will take to the field for the task.
DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said all preparations have been taken to complete the removal of sacrificial waste before the scheduled time, adding: “All preparations have been made to provide a clean environment to city residents by removing sacrificial waste before the 12-hour timeframe announced by the government. God willing, we will be able to complete the removal of sacrificial waste from the Dhaka North City Corporation area before the government's deadline.
