The family of the Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar say they have not been able to contact him for the past four days since he travelled to India for medical treatment.
Abdur Rouf, the personal secretary to the Awami League MP, said on Sunday that Anar went there on May 11. “He has been unreachable by phone since the 16th of May despite repeated attempts.”
He said the family sent several people to India to locate him.
Md Saidul Karim Mintu, general secretary of Jhenaidah District Awami League, said they had a meeting on Saturday to discuss Jhenaidah-1 by-election, but Anar did not attend it.
“We tried reaching him on his phone without success. Later, we discovered that he had gone to India but became unreachable. We’ve informed the party high-ups about the matter. A search for the MP is currently underway,” he said.
Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police Azim Ul Ahsan confirmed that Anar's family has been in contact with him about the situation, and he has informed higher authorities.
He remained untraced until Sunday afternoon, the officer said.
Anar, president of Kaliganj Upazila Awami League, was elected MP for the third consecutive term in the Jan 7 vote with the Awami League’s ticket.
