Seven left-leaning student organisations have announced a joint panel called the “Pratirodh Parshod”, or resistance panel, to contest the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election.
From this platform, Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Emi will run for vice-president (VP). She earlier served as VP of Shamsunnahar Hall.
The general secretary (GS) post will be contested by Meghmallar Basu, president of the Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Union, while Md Jabir Ahmed Jubel, central GS of Revolutionary Student Unity, will run for assistant general secretary (AGS).
At a media briefing in Madhur Canteen on Tuesday, Jubel unveiled the full 28-member panel, comprising the Chhatra Union, Socialist Students’ Front, Revolutionary Student Unity, Student Council, Students’ and Youth Movement, Hill Students’ Council, and Democratic Student Platform. He noted that Emi was not directly tied to any of the left groups.
On Monday, the alliance had announced its decision to field a common panel and named four candidates, including Mozammel Haque of the Socialist Students’ Front for the secretary of Liberation War and democratic movements.
Other nominated candidates include Nuzia Hasin (Rasha) for common room, reading room and cafeteria secretary; Akash Ali for human rights and law; Liton Tripura for career development; Abu Mujahid for social service; Ninad Khan for transport; Nayeem Uddin for international affairs; Faria Matin (Ila) for literature and culture; Maliha Tabassum for sports; Sheikh Tasnuva Srishti for health and environment; Fatin Ishraq for science and technology; and Amanat Imran for research and publications.
Thirteen contenders have been named for member posts, including students from journalism, television and film, Pali and Buddhist studies, economics, disaster management, crafts, criminology, MIS, anthropology, physics, fine arts, health economics, and information science.
According to the schedule, voting will take place on Sept 9. The deadline for submitting nomination papers is Aug 19, with scrutiny on Aug 20 and the preliminary list on Aug 21. The withdrawal deadline is Aug 25, and the final list will be published on Aug 26.
So far, 565 nomination forms have been collected for 28 positions, with 442 picked up on the last day of the extended deadline.
