Islami Andolan Bangladesh has announced that it will not field candidates for Dhaka-13 and Bagerhat-1 seats in “respect” of Khelafat Majlis chief Mamunul Haque.
The party’s Joint Secretary General Gazi Ataur Rahman announced the decision in a statement on Monday.
The statement said, “Out of respect for Mamunul Haque, Islami Andolan will not field candidates for the two seats he has contested. The party candidates will be withdrawn from these two seats.”
The party will support Mamunul in both constituencies, it added.
Saying the decision was made “out of respect” for Mamunul’s sacrifice and contributions to Islamic politics, Ataur said the Islami Andolan has no plans to align with any other party.
He added that the party will support “honest and qualified candidates based on principles and ideals” in constituencies where it is not fielding its own candidate.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami announced that it would not contest the seat of Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim, senior deputy chief of Islami Andolan Bangladesh.
Faizul has been nominated for the Barishal-5 (Sadar-City) and Barishal-6 (Bakerganj) constituencies.
