A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former expatriates’ welfare minister Imran Ahmed and former state minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury.
The order was issued on Thursday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib following two petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam, the petitions were submitted by ACC Assistant Director Khorshed Alam, who sought restrictions on the ministers leaving the country. The court approved the requests.
The ACC has prosecuted both of them on charges of accumulating assets beyond means.
The petition against Imran said that he illicitly acquired assets worth Tk 9.06 million, which are inconsistent with his known sources of income.
It also mentioned that he conducted transactions amounting to Tk 60.41 million through five bank accounts in his name, which the commission described as "suspicious".
In the case against Khalid Mahmud, the ACC alleged that he had abused his power to illegally amass Tk 57.38 million beyond his known sources of income.
The petition also claimed that he carried out transactions totalling Tk 136 million through 11 bank accounts and five card accounts, which were also deemed "suspicious".
Khorshed said that the duo were attempting to flee the country, and argued that a travel ban was essential to ensure a proper investigation.
Imran was arrested on Oct 21 in Banani following the change in government. He is also facing a human trafficking case filed at the capital’s Paltan Police Station on Sep 3 by Afia Overseas proprietor Altab Khan.
A five-time MP from Sylhet-4, he was appointed state minister for expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment in 2018 and promoted to full minister the following year.
Since the fall of the Awami League government, the whereabouts of Khalid remain unknown.
