A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to life in prison for abducting a child from Keraniganj in 2014.

Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Fourth Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Monday.

The convict, Imam Hossain, was also fined Tk 100,000, prosecutor Ershad Alam George said.

If he fails to pay, he will have to serve another year of simple imprisonment.

The court also directed the Dhaka district magistrate or collector to recover the fine, including through the sale of Imam’s movable and immovable property if necessary, and hand the money to the victim’s family.

Imam was present in court when the verdict was announced and was sent to prison afterwards.

According to the case dossier, the victim, then aged 7, was playing with friends outside Khejur Bagh Noor Bagh High School in Keraniganj on Oct 15, 2014 when Imam and several others approached her.

They allegedly told her they would take her to see a fair by the river and then took her to a nearby area in Narikel Bagh.

Local residents came to the child’s aid after hearing her cries and detained Imam at the scene.

The child’s father, Ibrahim Sheikh, filed a case with South Keraniganj Police Station the following day.

Police submitted a chargesheet against Imam on Nov 30, 2014.

The court later framed charges and heard testimony from four witnesses before delivering the verdict.
