Local residents have detained and turned a man over to the police over allegations of killing another man and then raping the victim’s wife in Cox's Bazar.

The incident occurred around midnight on Sunday in the Kolatoli area of the beach town, according to Cox's Bazar Model Police Station chief Elias Khan.

Authorities later recovered the body of the man, believed to be around 55 years old. He was a resident of Rangamati. The detainee, meanwhile, is aged 54 and was reportedly intoxicated at the time. Both men were working as labourers on a local betel nut plantation.

A local resident who witnessed the incident said that around 11:30pm, he heard a woman screaming about being attacked.

"When five or six of us rushed over, we saw the woman was barely clothed. We quickly brought clothes from a nearby house and gave them to her. While we were taking her towards her home, a man was passing by. The woman pointed him out, saying he had killed her husband. We then detained him on the spot.”

“Later, when we went into the house, we found the body lying in one of the rooms. There were multiple machete wounds on the back of the head. We immediately informed the police, and they arrived and took away both the body and the people involved.”

Residents said that although the suspect had been seen in the area for the past two months, they had not seen the victim and his wife before.

The victim’s wife said that she and her husband had been running a pineapple business in Rangamati. But as it was not enough to support their family, they came to Cox’s Bazar three days ago to work on the betel nut plantation. She said they had been staying at the suspect’s house as he was an acquaintance.

Describing the incident, the woman said: “After killing my husband, the man did bad things to me. At one point I managed to escape and call for help."

Quoting locals, Elias said the incident involved two Chakma families. Police suspect that after becoming drunk, the suspect killed the husband and then raped the wife.

“The knife used in the killing has been recovered. The body has been sent to the morgue at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.”

Elias added that the rescued woman had been admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where medical exams were being carried out based on her initial complaint.
