The depression in the north-west of the Bay of Bengal has moved further northwest and developed into a deep depression.
The weather system may result in more rain from Wednesday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
“The rain may intensify under the influence of the deep depression on Sept 11, 12, and 13,” said Meteorologist Md Bazlur Rashid on Monday morning. “Aside from this, there shouldn’t be much impact on Bangladesh. It will move towards India’s Odisha.”
In a special bulletin on Monday, the BMD said the deep depression is about 705 km west-southwest of Chattogram Port, 685 km west-southwest of Cox’s Bazar Port, 525 km west-southwest of Mongla Port and 550 km west-southwest of Payra Port. It is expected to move northwest and may cross the Odisha coast near Puri.
The weather system is causing a steep pressure gradient over the north bay, which means that the maritime ports, north bay, and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh may experience gusts and squalls.
The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 kph rising to 60 kph in gusts and squalls within 48 km of the centre of the deep depression. The sea will remain rough near the centre of the system.
The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to keep local cautionary signal No. 3 hoisted.
All fishing boats and trawlers should stay close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice, the BMD said.
