A young man has been stabbed to death allegedly by supporters of a candidate for the chairman’s post of newly formed Eidgaon Upazila in Cox’s Bazar after voting.
The man, Safur Alam, reportedly went to rescue fellow supporter Delwar, identified with a single name and held by rivals in the West Pokkhali area on Tuesday afternoon.
Safur was rushed to a local hospital where the doctor declared him dead around 4:20pm.
Delwar said the supporters of Abu Taleb, a candidate with the motorcycle symbol, confined him when he went to a house to have a meal.
When Safur rushed to the house to rescue him, Taleb’s men stabbed Safur, he said. Both Delwar and Safur were followers of Shamsul Alam, the candidate with the telephone symbol.
Shuvo Ranjan Chakma, chief of Eidgaon Police Station, said the process to recover the body and send it to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy was under way. “We’re taking legal steps over the incident.”
