Highway DIG Shafiqul Islam appointed detective chief after four-month vacancy

He fills the shoes of Rezaul, who was transferred following criticism over model Meghna’s arrest

Highway Police's Deputy Inspector General Md Shafiqul Islam has been appointed additional commissioner and head of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, filling a post that had remained vacant for nearly four months.

The appointment order was issued on Wednesday by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali, assigning the officer from the 18th BCS batch to lead the influential unit.

The position fell vacant in April after DB police arrested model Meghna Alam at a residence in Bashundhara on Apr 9, an operation that drew sharp criticism of then the DB chief Rezaul Karim Mallick.

Mallick was subsequently transferred to DMP headquarters.
