Lynch mob beats 'mugger' to death in Mohammadpur

Police say local residents catch two during group mugging, rest manage to flee

A man has been killed and another injured after being beaten by a mob during an alleged mugging attempt in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur, police said.

The incident took place in the Basila Housing City area on Thursday morning.

The deceased has been identified with a single name, Rakib, 28, from Char Fasson in Bhola.

The injured, also identified with a single name, Milon, 38, is from South Aicha in Bhola.

Both had been residing in Basila.

Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Mohammadpur zone, said several young men had attempted a mugging in the residential area with locally-made weapons.

“Locals gathered and managed to catch two of them. The others got away,” he said.

Both men were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where Rakib was declared dead. Milon remains under treatment.
