Police have arrested five people, including a leader of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, in allegations of extortion in Dhaka’s Gulshan.

They were arrested from in front of a house in Gulshan No. 2 on Saturday evening, said Al Amin Hossein, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Gulshan Division.

Four of the arrestees have been identified as Md Sakadaun Siam, 22, Sadman Sadar, 21, Md Ibrahim Hossain, 24, and Abdur Razzak Riad, 25.

The fifth is a minor and so his name, identity, and photo have not been released by the police.

Among the arrestees, Riad is among the joint conveners of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement’s private university wing.

Al Amin said, “We arrested them in front of a house in Gulshan 2 after receiving allegations of extortion.”

Asked who the house belonged to and who was being extorted, he said: “We have yet to receive a written complaint. Details will be available once we receive the complaint.”

A policeman from Gulshan Police Station said the arrestees had gone to the home of a former member of parliament to demand extortion money. They had also gone to the house previously to demand money as well.
