Students of Bright School and College in the Dhaka's Donia are protesting on the school campus, alleging that Sabiqun Nahar, a student of the school, died by suicide due to “pressure and mistreatment from the school”.

The students' protest, which began on Thursday morning, is continuing till noon, Kadamtali Police Station chief Sheikh Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman told bdnews24.com around 1:30pm.

"The students are still continuing to stage protests. They are alleging that their classmate Sabiqun Nahar died by suicide due to pressure and mistreatment from the school," he said.

"They are trying to confuse the issue. The girl's family has not filed any complaint of pressure or mistreatment against the school authorities."

He also said that police are present on the school campus to control the situation.

Police officer Ashrafuzzaman said that Sabiqun Nahar, a 10th grade student at the school, died by suicide earlier on Wednesday.

The protesters carried placards with different slogans, including “Why did you kill my sister?” and “We want justice for murder, we want Liton’s trial - this is our one-point demand”.

Around noon, the students blocked the school campus, where the founder and chairman of Bright Group, Masud Hasan Liton, and the principal, Md Maidur Rahman Gem, were stationed. They remained blockaded as of the filing of this report at 2pm.

Maria, a tenth grader of the arts branch in the school, told bdnews24.com: "On Wednesday, we, humanities department students, had two model tests on Bengali and Economics. Sabikun probably didn’t have proper preparation for the Economics test. At one point she started drawing something on the exam paper. Noticing that, the Economics miss (teacher) took Sabikun’s exam paper and sent it to founder Masud Hasan Liton. He scolded and misbehaved with Sabikun for quite a long time. At one point, Sabikun’s parents were called and they were mistreated as well. Later Sabikun returned home and died by suicide.”

"Mr Liton had mistreated with Sabikun earlier as well. Sabikun chose to kill herself just because of him. We want Liton’s punishment.”

Attempts were made to contact Liton, the founder of the school and chairman of Bright Group, by mobile phone for comment on this matter, but he did not respond.
