Tarique Rahman has taken oath as the prime minister of Bangladesh, marking the BNP’s return to power after two decades.

President Md Shahabuddin administered the oath to Tarique and members of his new cabinet on Tuesday afternoon at the South Plaza of the parliament complex.

The ceremony opened with the national anthem, followed by a Quran recitation. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani then formally announced Tarique as prime minister.

He then took the oath for the prime minister’s office and the confidentiality pledge, signing both to complete the process.

Tarique is forming his government with 25 ministers and 24 state ministers following his party’s landslide victory in the Feb 12 election.

The swearing-in marks the BNP’s comeback to state power after 20 years. It also means Bangladesh has a new political figure as prime minister for the first time in three decades.

Several members of the new cabinet have become MPs for the first time and are now taking on responsibilities in government. Tarique himself has been elected to parliament for the first time in this election. The cabinet also includes two leaders from parties allied with the BNP.
