Measles outbreak: 3 deaths, 188 new cases reported in a day

Dhaka hospitals see the highest intake of patients with measles and related symptoms over past 24 hours

Three people have died of measles and measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the recent fatalities, one was a confirmed case of measles, while two others died exhibiting symptoms of the disease.

According to official data, the total death toll since the current outbreak began on Mar 15 has reached 223.

The DGHS bulletin revealed that of the total deaths, 38 have been laboratory-confirmed as measles, while 185 individuals died with suspected symptoms.

Dhaka remains the worst-affected region, recording the highest number of symptomatic deaths at 84.

The Rajshahi Division follows with 66 reported fatalities.

The country recorded 188 new confirmed measles cases in the last 24 hours.

During the same period, 1,159 people sought treatment with symptoms. Of the symptomatic patients, 913 required hospitalisation.

Dhaka's hospitals are bearing the brunt of the surge, with 389 new symptomatic patients admitted in a single day.
