A Nigerian military plane flying from Benin City to Lagos crashed in southwestern Ondo state on Monday, killing all 32 people aboard, including 25 passengers and seven crew members.

President Bola Tinubu confirmed there were no survivors and expressed "profound sadness", offering condolences to the families of those killed.

Tinubu said he had directed the Nigerian Air Force to immediately begin a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash to help prevent future incidents.

The ATR-42 aircraft was on a routine mission when air traffic controllers lost contact with it at 0813 GMT, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said.

The crash was one of the deadliest air disasters in Nigeria in recent years.

Wreckage was later found near the coastal town of Igbokoda, where search and rescue teams were deployed.
