US President Donald Trump has demanded that countries benefiting from security in the Strait of Hormuz reimburse Washington for protecting the vital oil transit corridor.
Trump said on Truth Social on Monday that petroleum shipments were continuing through the strait and argued that America should be compensated once its military campaign against Iran comes to an end.
"Oil is flowing through the Hormuz Strait. The countries of the world, which have been no help to us whatsoever, should, and will, reimburse the United States of America when this scam conflagration is all over," Trump wrote.
He added that Washington had been doing more for others than for itself "for generations".
Tehran, meanwhile, claims authority over the strategic waterway and enforces transit restrictions, with Iranian officials maintaining that ships must follow routes and protocols set by Iran, Indian outlet NDTV said.
Washington has rejected Iran's claim of governance over the strait, it added.
In another post, Trump sought to shift blame for domestic inflation away from his administration, pinning higher costs on former president Joe Biden.
"I hope everyone realises that price increases throughout America were caused by Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden administration, not by Trump. Even oil was higher under Biden than it is right now, and we prevented Iran from having a nuclear weapon," he wrote.
