The Election Commission received the complaint from the Returning Officer Dulal Talukder in this regard on Saturday noon in a faxed message.

Talukder says the Bakerganj Police Station’s OC assaulted the Assistant Returning Officer Jahidul Islam at Hijla Government Primary School. He also pushed Islam out of the polling centre.

Islam’s office assistant Hiron Bepari was also injured during the assault by the police officer, he says.

The OC was closed soon after the issue was taken up with the Barisal Superintendent of Police. Additional Superintendent of Police Jahangir Mallik was also asked to file a report after visiting the scene, adds the returning officer.

An Election Commission official says the returning officer asked the secretary at the Election Commission to take necessary steps on the matter.

The EC will take steps on the issue after discussing it at its meeting, he adds.
