Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has announced a Tk 5 million cash reward for the Bangladesh national women's football team after they secured their maiden spot in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup finals.
Afeida Khandaker, Ritu Porna, and the team returned to the country on Sunday night after completing the qualifiers in Myanmar. On Monday, the advisor announced the prize.
Bangladesh began the qualifiers by thrashing Bahrain 7-0. A 2-1 victory against hosts Myanmar secured the red and green brigade’s ticket to the Asian Cup.
In the third match, they crushed Turkmenistan 7-0, finishing the qualifiers undefeated under coach Peter James Butler.
After winning the Women's SAFF Championship in Nepal last year, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) had announced a Tk 15 million reward for the team. However, the country's football governing body has not yet been able to disburse that money.
The main stage of the Asian Cup will be held in Australia next March. If Bangladesh finishes among the top six teams in this tournament, they will get the opportunity to play in the World Cup.
Keeping the Australia tournament in mind, BFF President Tabith Awal gave a message of support to the team at a reception on Sunday.
