Lionel Messi will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires ahead of his Argentina farewell match against Benin on Oct 6.
The university’s Superior Council unanimously approved the Doctor Honoris Causa, its highest honorary distinction, in recognition of Messi’s sporting career and his representation of Argentina.
UBA said Messi’s career reflected “excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical conduct”, as well as a commitment to representing the country.
The university also highlighted his role in Argentina’s Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup, as well as their runners-up finish at the 2026 World Cup.
UBA Rector Ricardo Gelpi said the honour went beyond Messi’s achievements on the pitch, describing him as an “example and ambassador” of Argentina’s popular culture and national identity.
Messi is due to receive the distinction on Tuesday before Argentina face Benin at the Monumental in Buenos Aires, in what is set to be his final appearance for the national team.
The 39-year-old announced his international retirement in the wake of Argentina’s defeat by Spain in the World Cup final but agreed to return for one last appearance at home.
