Julian Metherell is set to become the next president of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), assuming the role on Oct 1, according to ESPNcricinfo.
His nomination was announced by current MCC President Ed Smith at the club’s 239th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday.
Metherell, the London Spirit chair who led MCC's negotiations in last year's Hundred equity sale, has been an MCC member for 40 years and joined the MCC committee for a three-year term at last year’s AGM.
He spent his career in finance, including as a partner at Goldman Sachs from 1999 to 2011, in which time he served as chief executive officer of the UK investment banking division between 2006 and 2011.
With interests primarily in the energy and shipping sectors, he founded the London-based Genel Energy company.
Metherell also chairs the advisory board of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, and was the Non-Executive Chair of the Professional Cricketers' Association between 2019 and 2024.
"I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols," Metherell was quoted as saying.
Recounting his memories involving the MCC and Lord's, he says his new role comes at an “exciting time” as the club starts a new era of ownership.
“And I am looking forward to driving forward both the club and London Spirit."
Lord's will host Australia's men's and women's teams in next year’s Ashes series during Metherell's tenure.
