The three-time MP from Natore died in a hospital in Kolkata on Thursday, Harun-ur-Rashid, a local leader, told bdnews24.com.

Patal, a former vice-president of Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) from Bangladesh Chhatra League, had been suffering kidney complications and other health issues for a long time, Rashid said.

He went to Kolkata last month for treatment.

Patal was undergoing treatment in Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences when he breathed his last around 9pm.

The former state minister for youth and sport of the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami government's tenure was made a member of Khaleda's Advisory Council in the new committee of the party announced last week.

He has left behind his wife, two sons and two daughters.
