BNP candidate Rafiqul Islam Maznu’s wealth has surged nearly fivefold over the past seven years, according to his declaration for the Feni-1 parliamentary race.
His wife, businesswoman Najmun Nahar Hasi, has also seen her assets jump nearly 3.5 times during the same period.
The couple’s combined movable and immovable assets are valued at over Tk 180 million. Maznu currently faces 168 cases, up from 57 in 2018.
Maznu, who serves as the convener of the Dhaka South City BNP, initially filed his nomination for the Feni-2 seat as an alternative candidate to former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Following her death, he remains the primary contender under the “Paddy Sheaf” symbol.
He had earlier stepped in as the party's candidate during the 11th general election when legal complications prevented Khaleda from running.
According to Maznu’s election declaration submitted to the returning officer, his immovable property totals Tk 77.63 million. This includes:
• A portion of a six-storey building in Shantinagar, Dhaka – Tk 5.92 million
• A 10,162sqft shop at National Volleyball Stadium – Tk 1.21 million
• A 19.57sqm shop at Concord Market Twin Tower, Shantinagar – Tk 0.057 million
• Land in Chhagalnaiya – Tk 5.39 million
• A 350.58sqft shop at China Town Market, Paltan – Tk 1.36 million
• A 1,515sqft flat in Shantinagar – Tk 1.31 million
• Flats in South Shahjahanpur, 1,547sqft and 1,514sqft – Tk 3.89 million each
His other assets include Tk 300,000 deposited in Dhaka Bank, an FDR of Tk 2 million in UCBL, a Noah microbus valued at Tk 3.4 million, and cash worth Tk 2.7 million. Although the value was not specified in the document, Maznu also declared 20 bhoris or 233.2gm of gold.
In 2018, Maznu’s total combined assets were valued at Tk 16.3 million, while his wife’s assets stood at Tk 30 million.
Within seven years, his wealth has increased by 4.75 times, while his wife's assets grew 3.5 times.
