Eight like-minded political parties, including the Jamaat-e-Islami, have announced a three-day protest in the fourth phase of their ongoing movement to demand an official ‘order’ for the implementation of the July Charter and a referendum by November.

At a media briefing on Sunday afternoon, Khelafat Majlis Secretary General Ahmed Abdul Kader announced the programme on behalf of the eight parties.

As part of the plan, the alliance will hold rallies and marches in Dhaka on Oct 20, in all divisional cities on Oct 25, and in district towns on Oct 27.

Abdul Kader said: “If our demands are not met by Oct 27, we will call for a broader nationwide movement, God willing.”

Since Sept 30, Jamaat, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party, Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party–JAGPA and Bangladesh Development Party have been pressing five key demands:

Issue an order to implement the July National Charter and hold a referendum on it by November

Introduce proportional representation (PR) in both parliamentary houses in the next national election

Ensure a level-playing field for all to guarantee free, fair and acceptable polls

Bring to justice all acts of oppression, genocide and corruption by the ‘fascist" government

Ban the activities of the “autocratic” regime’s ally, the Bangladesh Jatiya Party, and the 14-party coalition
