Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has sent a condolence message on behalf of the interim government following the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The message was delivered to BNP acting chief Tarique Rahman at his Gulshan office around noon on Monday by the Chief Advisor’s Private Secretary Shazeeb M Khairul Islam, according to a statement from Yunus’s office.

In the message, Yunus expressed deep sorrow and grief at Khaleda’s passing and prayed for the salvation of her soul.

He also conveyed heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family members, party leaders, activists and supporters.

Khaleda, the country’s first female prime minister, died in the early hours of Dec 30 after undergoing treatment at a hospital for 40 days.

Her funeral prayers were held the following day outside the Jatiya Sangsad building amid a massive gathering. She was later laid to rest beside her husband late president Ziaur Rahman’s grave at Zia Udyan with state honours.

Following the BNP chairperson’s death, the party has been observing seven days of mourning. As part of the programme, party leaders and activists are wearing black badges, while party flags at BNP offices have been kept at half-mast alongside black flags.
