BNP Vice Chairman AJDM Zahid Hossain said Mirza Fakhrul was placed on ‘full rest’ at the coronary care unit or CCU at Gulshan’s United Hospital on Monday morning.
“He had chest pain while at home this morning and was rushed to the hospital,” Dr Hossain told bdnews24.com.
“He is stable now, was transferred to a general cabin at 4:30pm. Hopefully, he will be able to go home Tuesday,” he added.
The BNP secretary general is receiving care under the supervision of heart specialist Dr Momenuzzaman.
BNP Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice-chairmen Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Barkatullah Bulu and Abdul Awal Mintoo, among others, visited him at the hospital.
His wife Rahat Ara Begum and younger brother Mirza Faysal Amin are with him.
Fakhrul’s mother Fatima Amin was also recently admitted to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital due to old-age complications.
He was diagnosed with a carotid artery block while in prison in 2016. He later received treatment in the US and Singapore.
Mirza Fakhrul and the members of the BNP Standing Committee have been organising the party and holding demonstrations calling for the release of Khaleda.
The party chief has been in jail since Feb 8 when a special court sentenced her to five years in prison for corruption in Zia Orphanage Trust.
Her son Tarique Rahman has taken over as acting chairman but he has been living in London for a decade for 'treatment'.
