The National Citizen Party (NCP) has greeted the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with flowers on its 47th founding anniversary.

On Monday evening, an NCP delegation visited the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, and presented bouquets to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed.

The NCP team included Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam, Senior Joint Convenors Samantha Sharmin and Ariful Islam Adeeb, and Organiser Mostak Ahmed Shishir, among others.

The parties’ ideologies differ sharply over the next parliamentary election, voting methods, the Constitution, the July Proclamation and the National Charter. But the gesture was warmly received by BNP leaders, and the two sides held discussions for some time.

The BNP, founded by late president Ziaur Rahman on Sept 1, 1978, is celebrating its 47th anniversary.

After the meeting, NCP’s Samantha Sharmin said: “BNP is another name for democracy. We came to welcome them on their anniversary.”

She added that discussions touched on repression during Sheikh Hasina’s rule, including legal charges, harassment, and family suffering faced by opposition activists.
