Former state minister Kamal Ahmed Mojumder has been admitted to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Dhaka after falling ill in jail.

He was transferred from the Keraniganj Central Jail to the hospital around 11pm on Thursday, according to prison guard Billal Hossain, who accompanied him.

Billal said Kamal, a senior Awami League leader and former four-time MP from Dhaka-15, became unwell around 8pm.

“His blood pressure and blood sugar levels dropped. The prison doctor examined him and referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he had to be diverted to NICVD due to lack of available beds.”

Kamal, who served as state minister for industries in 2018, was arrested on Oct 18, 2024, amid a wave of detentions following the fall of the Awami League government in the face of student-led mass uprising.

He has remained behind bars since then.

He faces several cases, including charges of murder and attempted murder, one of which was filed with Banani police.

Police have also interrogated him in remand in connection with some of the cases.
