Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said preparations for the upcoming national election are in full swing, though he did not discuss a timeframe for the upcoming national polls with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus during their recent meeting.
Speaking at the Election Commission (EC) headquarters on Tuesday, Nasir Uddin said Yunus was only briefed about the state of election preparations in the courtesy call.
“He inquired about the preparations, and I informed him that we are proceeding at full throttle,” Nasir said, adding: “The election preparations are now in full gear.”
Responding to questions, he said: “We are preparing with the February to April window in mind. The exact date and election schedule will be announced in due time by the Election Commission.”
The one-on-one meeting between Yunus and Nasir took place on Jun 26 at the State Guest House Jamuna. While the Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO) issued a statement acknowledging the meeting, it did not mention the content of their discussion, leading to speculations in political circles.
That speculation intensified following a joint statement issued two weeks earlier from London, where Yunus met BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, suggesting the 13th parliamentary polls could be held in mid-February next year.
When asked about it previously, Nasir noted the declaration had no official signatures, so he could not treat it as a “government announcement”. He also said he had not been formally informed by the government of any specific election month.
On Tuesday, when asked directly whether the possible February date came up during the meeting with Yunus, the CEC said it did not.
“It was a courtesy meeting, although some issues were discussed,” he said. “But there was no conversation about a February election date.”
Some political parties have demanded that local government elections be held before the national vote. The Yunus-CEC meeting did not discuss this either, according to Nasir.
“He has only spoken about the national election. That’s where our primary focus is,” Nasir Uddin said.
