The BNP has assured that effective measures will be taken to stop post-election violence, National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Akhter Hossen has said.
He said the pledge was a step towards restoring political stability after the polls.
Akhter made the remarks while speaking after a courtesy meeting between BNP chief and prime minister-designate Tarique Rahman and NCP Convenor Nahid Islam, held following the BNP’s landslide victory in the Feb 12 elections.
Tarique visited Nahid’s Bailey Road residence on Sunday night, where discussions covered politics, the July Uprising, reforms and the post-election situation, according to Akhter.
He described the visit as an expression of political courtesy.
“We believe this signals a change in Bangladesh’s political culture,” he said.
Before meeting Nahid, Tarique had paid a courtesy call on Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman at his Bashundhara residence.
Despite the BNP securing an absolute parliamentary majority, the NCP -- an election ally of the Jamaat-e-Islami -- also recorded a victory, with Nahid winning the Dhaka-11 seat.
Akhter said discussions focused on how political parties could work together for the country despite ideological differences, though he noted that the NCP still has questions over the results in several constituencies.
“Even so, we commend Tarique Rahman for coming from a place of political courtesy. We congratulate him on his victory,” he said.
The talks also addressed reform, justice and accountability, as well as steps needed to support those affected by the 2024 student-led mass uprising.
“We want political differences to remain,” Akhter said. “Programmes and statements will differ. But on national questions, all political parties must decide together. That is our expectation.”
Asked whether the NCP would join a BNP-led inclusive government, he said the issue was not discussed.
Akhter said Tarique was presented with a symbolic gift -- a water lily bud sculpture -- which he accepted warmly.
