Police have recovered the body of Jannatara Rumi, a member of the National Citizen Party (NCP) from a student hostel in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh.
The body was recovered from a hostel at Old Kachabazar Road in Jigatala on Thursday, said Inspector Shahadat Hossain of Hazaribagh Police Station. It was sent to the morgue for post-mortem.
Rumi, 30, was the daughter of Md Zakir Hossain, a resident of Naogaon’s Patnitala Upazila.
She was the joint coordinator of the NCP's Dhanmondi Thana branch, said Saleh Uddin Sifat, the party's joint member secretary (office).
Shahadat said, "After receiving a report on 999, we went to the scene and found her hanging from the ceiling fan."
The shared accommodation has hardboard partitions inside, which still allows people to see into their adjoining rooms.
Shahadat said, “In the morning, a domestic aide arrived and saw through a gap in the partition board that Rumi was hanging from the ceiling fan. She called out and others rushed to the spot. Then the police were informed.”
Police recovered anti-depression pills from Rumi’s room, the police officer said, adding: "After talking to the neighbours, we learnt that she had mental health issues connected to family trouble.”
Her body has been sent to the morgue in Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem. The cause of death will be determined afterwards, Inspector Shahadat said.
