BNP’s Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman has called on the people not to let the interim government fail in its mission of establishing a democratic system.
He made these remarks while addressing a party rally virtually from London, which was held in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan on Tuesday afternoon.
The BNP organised the rally in observance of the International Day of Democracy.
Tarique stressed the importance of political reforms aimed at restoring public trust in the state and its institutions.
He emphasised reforming the Election Commission, public administration, and law-enforcing agencies for ensuring a fair election.
The BNP leader called on the caretaker administrations to prioritise these reforms.
“The path of reforms will lead us to the election roadmap,” Tarique said. “Let us earn the trust and love of the people through our work. Stay with the people and remain engaged with them.”
He also encouraged BNP leaders to prepare for the future, urging them to avoid being misled by temptations or provocations.
He highlighted the need for a qualitative change in political practices to achieve a meaningful transformation in state and politics.
“A change of power should not just be a transfer of authority, but a qualitative shift in governance. This requires a behavioural change among political leaders and activists,” said Tarique.
He continued, “If anyone thinks that more political parties are needed for a mature and secure Bangladesh, there is no issue with that. In the end, it is the people who will make the final decision.
"The people have the right to choose whom they support or oppose. This is why the BNP has always emphasised the importance of the people's right to vote. The BNP believes that only through free and fair elections can the public be directly involved with the state, politics, and political arrangements.”
Tarique said the interim government is the result of the mass uprising achieved through the blood of countless people.
“While not all of its actions may be seen as successful by everyone, it is important to remember that the failure of this government would be the failure of all of us, of the people of Bangladesh.
He urged everyone to remain vigilant to ensure that the interim government does not become the cause of its failure.
“External provocations from abroad will not lead the people to let this government fail. The people have continued to support this government and will continue to do so,” he added.
