National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has demanded the removal and arrest of President Mohammed Shahabuddin through impeachment, accusing him of violating his oath and remaining silent during the July Uprising killings.

Speaking in Mymensingh on Friday, the Opposition chief whip in parliament described the president as a “fascist’s accomplice”.

“We will call for his swift removal through impeachment, the election of a new president, and his arrest. He has broken his oath, faces allegations of financial corruption, and was indifferent during the July [Uprising] ‘massacre’.”

Referring to what he called “election engineering”, Nahid said: “Even after so much manipulation, the people elected some of us as members of parliament.

“We entered parliament to implement reforms, strengthen the upper house, and reform the constitution. We had the mandate to see a parliament free of ‘fascist’ stooges.”

He criticised the government for allowing the president to address the parliament. “Although the first parliament session started well, and we participated sincerely, the ‘fascist’s accomplice’ president was given the floor.

“We raised our objections with the speaker, but no opportunity was given, and the president was allowed to speak. In protest, we walked out,” he added.
