National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has urged the administration to arrest those responsible for the attack on their rally in Gopalganj, calling the district a stronghold of “fascists”.
He accused pro-Awami League groups of launching the assault.
“Our peaceful pre-announced rally came under attack from Awami [League] terrorists,” Nahid said. “These fascists have turned Gopalganj into their shelter.
“We will free the people of this district from ‘Mujibism’.”
He was addressing a street rally at Janata Bank intersection in Faridpur town on Thursday afternoon.
Calling for justice, the NCP leader urged the authorities not to harass any ordinary citizen in the name of investigation.
Referring to recent incidents in Gopalganj, he said: “Four people have been killed in extra-judicial executions there. Even for the criminals, we believe in human rights.
“There are accomplices of the fascists within the administration. We tell them -- until the criminals are brought to justice, we will not leave the streets.”
He also made it clear that the party will return to Gopalganj.
“Those who thought they could stop the July March by force have clearly forgotten who they’re dealing with,” he said. “We’ve faced death before -- we will not back down in the face of attacks.”
Nahid noted that the July March will continue across all 64 districts, and the final stop will be Dhaka. “We’ve promised the people of this country that the march will end by the 3rd of August.
“On that day, we’ll gather at the [Central] Shaheed Minar and take our position to press for the July Declaration,” he added.
