The National Citizen Party (NCP) has issued a statement over the alleged harassment of journalists by the party’s activists as they were working at the Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

In the statement, sent on Thursday by Joint Chief Coordinator Khan Muhammad Mursalin, the party said: "The NCP is looking into the matter. Work is already under way to identify the individuals responsible. Instructions have been given to take organisational action against them once proof is established."

The statement added: "A 'Bangla Spring' is continuing across South Asian countries following the popular uprising of July 2024. Subsequently, we are also seeing Gen Z in several African countries rising up against corruption and discrimination. These incidents are carrying new messages for global politics."

NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen and Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Jara travelled with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus to attend the UN General Assembly session as part of his delegation.

There, they exchanged views on the political rise of Gen Z on various global platforms, as well as their new political aspirations and settlements across different countries, eras, and contexts. They presented their ideas in various forums as leaders of the “Bangla Spring”.

The statement said that upon their return to Bangladesh on Thursday, the NCP had intended to hold a press conference to present the party’s achievements, potential, and challenges in global leadership platforms.

"However, in the interim, there have been allegations of misconduct by NCP activists towards journalists. This is both regrettable and condemnable."

The NCP added: "Journalists are co-travellers in the NCP's progress. Therefore, such an unwelcome incident in the midst of this harmonious relationship is never desirable.

“The NCP will certainly be more vigilant on this matter."
