Many from the theatre and culture communities are paying their respects to renowned artist and puppetry pioneer Mustafa Monwar at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar.
Individuals and organisations counted among the artist’s admirers have queued to pay their tributes.
The vehicle carrying Monwar's mortal remains reached the Shaheed Minar from the BTV premises at 11am. People then lined up to present flowers.
Playwrights Ramendu Majumder, Mamunur Rashid, Tariq Anam Khan, Nima Rahman, Trapa Majumder, State Minister for Culture Ali Newaz Mahmood Khyom, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy SK Rezauddin Ahmed Stalin, artist Monirul Islam, and visual artists Moniruzzaman, Sharmin S Murshid, Keramat Maula, Kazi Tamanna and Golam Rabbani paid their respects.
In addition to personal tributes, wreaths were placed on his coffin by the Bangladesh National Museum, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi, Golam Mostafa Academy, Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Narayanganj Institute of Fine Arts, Working Women, Democratic Left Unity and Socialist Student Front.
Theatre and media organisations Prachyanat, Battala, Duronta Station and Bangaranga Natyadal also paid their last respects to the departed artist.
Monwar’s funeral prayers were previously held at the Bangladesh Television premises in Rampura.
The multi-talented artist died at 8:30am on Monday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka's Square Hospital at age 91 after suffering from several diseases.
Painter Moniruzzaman said on Monday that the body would be at the Shaheed Minar until 12:30pm for people from all walks of life to pay tribute.
Afterwards, the body will be taken to the Central Mosque at Dhaka University, where another funeral prayer will be held. It will then be taken to his beloved workplace, the Dhaka University Faculty of Fine Arts.
Monwar will be laid to rest at the Banani Graveyard in the afternoon.
