May 1 is recognized worldwide as May Day, International Workers' Day or International Labour Day. It's observed every year to pay tribute to the contribution of workers across the world and is an official public holiday in various countries.
A lesser-known fact is that May 1 is celebrated as Global Love Day in various countries worldwide, but primarily in the United States.
Harold Becker, The founder of 'The Love Foundation,' proposed May 1 as Global Love Day in 2004 on behalf of his nonprofit organisation with the mission of inspiring people to love unconditionally. Their very first theme was 'Love Begins with Me' and 'Celebrating Our Humanity." Since then, the Foundation has used this day as a platform to promote its non-profit works, with the mission of building a sound foundation and understanding of love in all individuals.
The Love Foundation declared Global Love Day in 2007 as something everyone could participate in and that the message of love is spread to everyone. The first event involved Governors and Mayors, along with other prominent members of local and national governments. Since then, every year, other nations and communities worldwide join and celebrate this occasion. Thousands of people spread the love at their own events in different parts of the world.
The Foundation has now grown into a global family of individuals whose prime aim and regular inspirational messages to the masses is to promote and practice unconditional love. It emphasises that anything is achievable when we harmonise our minds to the frequency of unconditional love. Currently, they have over 300 honorary love ambassadors spread in 41 countries.
The Love Foundation has a flyer in over 40 languages with the following message:
"We are one humanity on this planet.
All life is interconnected and interdependent.
All share in the Universal bond of love.
Love begins with self-acceptance and forgiveness.
With tolerance and compassion, we embrace diversity.
Together we can make a difference through love."
The aim is to encourage everyone to express love in the ways they know, hoping to transform this world into heaven of love.
There is so much division, hatred, and negativity in the world that it takes great strength and insight to rise above our shallow mindedness. When you allow love to be your focus of life, it changes the perspective of looking at a world full of negativity and fear. It's heartwarming to see that there are so many wonderful people and organisations actively working to assist humanity. Look for love and you will see it all around you. Marking a day, even if it's just for a single day will help you to remember that there's a sea of love at work to negate the negatives.
You can discover that precious part of yours that knows love, by delving deep into your hearts: releasing the sufferings, shallow emotions, past mistakes, pride and ego through conscious acts of forgiveness and understanding. When you change your perspective, you will find the abundance of love that is buried inside us. This Love can change the world. Let's choose love over hatred, kindness over cruelty, compassion over jealousy, unity over segregation and peace over war.
The day can be celebrated in many ways. One suggestion is simply to love and let that be the focus of your awareness throughout the day. You may host a party with your family, friends and your community, organise a poem, essay or art competition with the theme: of love and unity; donate to charity, and use #GlobalLoveDay to share on social media. There are thousands of ways to show that you care.
No matter where you are, there is always someone who could do with a little bit of your love to brighten their day.
Times are hard with the pandemic. These times of crisis have made us realize how humanity is interconnected and interdependent; and through love and care, we can heal as individuals and collectively.
Even during this isolation and self-distancing period, you can contribute and share your love. Taking all precautionary measures, you can, volunteer for an hour at an orphanage: donate food and daily necessary items to the less fortunate and needy; visit an old home, or create virtual gatherings to share the day with your family, and friends, coworkers and community. Send messages of love through social media. There are innumerable ways we can express our universal love even from the safety of our homes.
All of us have that fountain of love lying hidden under the negativity that we see every day around us. Discover it, nourish it, and nurture it. Each of us can be a powerful force of love if we allow this energy to flow freely.
Global Love Day is merely a way of remembering that we possess infinite love to love and be loved; that love is always present and we can share our love for everyone, each day. We recognize everyone as an indispensable part of the whole picture of the universe. We inspire each other to combine our efforts to bring balance and harmony to this wonderful world of ours.
Unconditional love transcends boundaries. Open your heart. Let this love guide you through all the jealousy, hatred and negativity. No matter how others treat us, unconditional love champions forgiveness and understanding. It inspires the spirit to heal, embrace love and transform into a very beautiful pure soul.
With a world that is raging with hatred, violence, jealousy and greed or hunger for power: be it an individual or a country, or countries it's time to take this day as a reminder to create awareness of global love for all and make this world a peaceful loving society as one.
There is a long list of days which we celebrate internationally. I believe, Global Love Day should be given international recognition and due importance because of its noble intention of bringing global peace.
We need to create a better world where our next generation can live harmoniously without fear, immersed in an ocean of love, peace and harmony.
Be a part of it. Celebrate humanity. Spread the message of love and peace. Be an active player in fulfilling this dream of a wonderful world.
Let compassion be your gift to life.
Not begin the way it seems.
Nor does it end the way we think.
Not just a person or a thing,
But a galaxy of friends and strangers we meet;
Thousands of moments with them we love and cherish.
Love and be loved.
