A man has died after being struck by a falling concrete slab in India’s West Bengal amid a trail of destruction left by severe Cyclone Remal. Many areas in the state have been left without power due to the uprooting of trees and electricity poles.
It was raining in West Bengal even before the cyclonic storm hit the coast on Sunday night. The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain on Monday as well. Various areas in Kolkata have experienced waterlogging as water accumulates on the roads amid continuous showers.
According to a report by Anandabazar, 51-year-old Mohammad Sojib died after a concrete slab fell on his head in Bibir Bagan of Kolkata’s Amtali area during the storm.
Severe Cyclone Remal started to cross the coast between Khepupara and West Bengal on Sunday night. The storm has since weakened into a deep land depression after losing strength due to the rain.
The Alipore Met Office said, the maximum storm speed in Dumdum was 91 kph until 5:30am. While the alert has been reduced in eight districts of West Bengal, rain has been forecast in Kolkata throughout the day, with wind speeds between 50 and 60 kph.
Besides, heavy to very heavy rains have been predicted in Murshidabad and Nadia of India. The wind speed is estimated at 60 kph in the districts, rising to 80 kph in gusts. The districts may experience between 7-20 cm of rain.
The Indian Met Office also forecasts heavy rain in Howrah, Hugli, North 24 Parganas, East Bardhaman and Birbhum. The wind speed may reach 60 kph in these districts.
