Ten people have been killed and 19 others injured as a car carrying devotees for the Maha Kumbh Mela festival collided with a bus in India's Uttar Pradesh.
The accident occurred on the Mirzapur-Prayagraj highway near the Meja Police Station in Prayagraj around 2am on Saturday, according to the Hindustan Times.
The devotees were headed from Chhattisgarh’s Korba for a holy dip at the Sangam during the Kumbh while the bus was reportedly carrying pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh.
The accident is believed to have occurred because the driver of the car dozed off and lost control of the vehicle.
The bodies were sent to Swaroop Rani Nehru Medical Hospital for autopsies and other legal procedures are underway, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police Yamunanagar Vivek Chandra Yadav.
Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has instructed officials to reach the site and expedite relief efforts. He also urged them to ensure that the injured receive proper medical care.
