Doctors at the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital in Dhaka are conducting a work stoppage after allegations of an attack by fourth-grade officials.
All medical services, aside from the outdoor and emergency departments at the hospital, have been suspended as of 10am on Wednesday due to the strike.
A doctor at the hospital said that Dr Gurudas Mandal, a member of the pro-Awami League doctors’ association Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad, had been transferred to Pabna Medical College Hospital about four months ago. Recently, he was brought back again, stirring anger among doctors in favour of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
To discuss the issue, doctors went to the hospital’s Director Quazi Deen Mohammad to discuss the issue on Wednesday and a commotion broke out. The doctors left the room and were holding a meeting at Room No. 402 of the hospital when they were allegedly attacked by fourth-grade officials and some outsourcing workers.
One of the doctors taking part in the work stoppage said, “The director has let the employees down. The outsourcing officials have closed the outdoor clinic. They also chanted various slogans outside Room 402.”
The officials then went to lock the room of a doctor who belonged to the pro-BNP Doctors Association of Bangladesh. When some doctors attempted to stop them, the employees allegedly “attacked them”.
“Nothing like this has ever happened at NINS. The employees have never been able to attack doctors. But it happened today. Outsourcing employees get extra benefits under Deen Mohammad sir. That is why they attacked.”
Doctors launched their work stoppage from 10am to protest the attack. Later, doctors at the outdoor and emergency departments returned to work. However, surgeries remained suspended.
Several attempts were made to contact Director Deen Mohammad and Deputy Director Badrul Alam Mondol, but neither responded.
